One of the historical and cultural entertainments that can be visited in Samarkand is the Theater of Historical Costumes “El Merosi”. This is the only theater in Central Asia, revealing the magic of costumes and which carries the rich history and cultural heritage of Uzbekistan. It was founded in 2005, located in the city center in an old building and is designed for 100 guests. Having visited the performance, you can discover a lot about the culture, everyday life, traditions and customs of the people who inhabited these magnificent lands. The theatrical performance will plunge you into the past, which is rich in historical events and majestic images of the captivating East.
In the theater today there are more than two hundred historical costumes that are as unique and restored as possible thanks to the funds of world museums such as the Hermitage, Milan and British historical museums, as well as the frescoes of Afrosiab and Persepolis, the works of the great Persian miniature painter Kemal ad Din Bekzad and the historical chronicles of Shah Nam, Babur Nam and Zafar Nam. The choreographic performance of the costumes shows the images of Saks and Massagets, fire-worshipers, Persian and Sogdian nobles. In addition, you will see a huge collection of costumes from the reign of the Timurids, as well as colorful costumes from other areas of the country.
The performance consists of 12 episodes and goes under the classical national music. The sounds of musical instruments like flute, dutar, gijak and doira complement the palette of emotions received from viewing.

Having visited the performance, you can put together the beauty that exudes these colorful robes, feel the mysterious oriental flavor. The breeze from the colorful fans of Chinese and Korean dancers will be remembered for a long time. The charming Khorezm dance of Lyazgi, which is included in the list of Unique Intangible Heritage of UNESCO, will amuse all guests.
The theater building has a cozy cafe where you can taste local sweets, various drinks and exchange impressions about the performance. There is also a souvenir shop with local artisans in the lobby. Video and photography are prohibited, but it is possible to buy a disc with a recording of the show.
