The Great Silk Road

When we hear the term “Silk Road”, we inevitably think of caravans running in a convoy in the desert. The desert ships, two-humped camels, that carried valuable goods through inhospitable and dangerous terrain. But the trade routes have transported more than just valuable goods, as silk, paper and spices, beliefs, ideologies and knowledge too.

Due to its location, in the heart of the Silk Road, Uzbekistan has been an important hub for goods and a melting pot of cultures, ideologies and religions.

Even today, the wealth, which was created among other things by trading, can be seen in the breathtaking buildings of the historic cities. The diversity of people can still be seen today in the faces with their different features. More than 100 nations live peacefully in Uzbekistan.

The same applies to the religions. The Uzbeks tolerate every faith. In today’s Uzbekistan there are also sites of Zoroastrianism, Islam, Buddhism etc

About the knowledge: Did you know that the knowledge of papermaking was originally from China and came to Europe via Uzbekistan? Or that we owe the number zero to an Uzbek mathematics? Whose name was Al-Khwarizmi, who later wrote his masterpiece “Algebra”. Or what would medicine be today without Ibn Sinas – also known as Avicenna – explorations as well as his work “Canon of Medicine”. Or the khwarazmian scholar Zamakhshari, who wrote the Arabic grammar. These and other inventions found their way into the wide world along the legendary Silk Road..
